A Half-Timbered House

28mm scale is large enough to make scratchbuilding relatively easy, although time-consuming. This is the story of the first house in the Port of Hambeck.

My local hobby shop had some wonderful 5x5mm wooden sticks, and that inspired me to start building. I didn’t really have any plan for the house, but decided to just build and see where it would take me.

Eventually the house began to take shape and I started wondering about how to fill the areas between the timbers.

It seemed the easiest to use thin sheets of cork, which was easy to cut to shape

I added another story to make the house more interesting – also I love the upper floor protruding over the ground floor.

Then a roof, while wondering what type of roof would be most fitting and how to build it.

I added plaster on top of the cork in order to fill the spaces between the timbers – se more in the video below.

Eventually I decided on a thatched roof, as I imagined the house would be located in the outskirts of the town, next to the town wall. Many more details from the construction can be seen in the YouTube video of the house.

I hope you like the small house, built without any plans 🙂
